Everyone knows how popular Guild Wars was originally. They redefined the genre by releasing a game with absolutely zero monthly subscription during a time that most game designers thought the developers had just committed seppuku. Back then you emulated World of Warcraft, made an inexpensive game with an Item Mall and that was it.


Then along came Guild Wars and broke the mold, opening a whole new universe of MMORPGs to people who had never played them before. I remember so many friends who refused to even glance at the genre due to the combination of a nerdy stigma at the time, and the legitimate idea that once you buy something it should be yours to play forever. The idea of monthly fees was abhorrent to them. The idea of monthly fees was unethical to them.


Guild Wars came out and I got those friends started playing MMOs by buying it and before long they had overcome their preconceived prejudices and were playing EverQuest or World of Warcraft also. Guild Wars, to borrow a term from addiction science, is the ultimate "gateway" MMORPG. Guild Wars went on to be one of the most successful MMORPGs ever.

Anyway back to the latest Guild Wars 2 Trailer. All I can say is that it looks stunning!

From the Press Release they sent us reminding everyone here that the game is getting closer to release:

"Take the role of a noble human defender and fight for the survival of your people. Play a ferocious feline charr, carving a trail of conquest. Become one of the brilliant asura to study hidden knowledge and harness incredible magical technology. Assume the form of a shapeshifting norn, the massive battle-forged warriors from the far north. To set the stage for Guild Wars 2, this video introduces the five iconic heroes of each race, all voiced by accomplished actors. Logan Thackeray the human defender is voiced by Troy Baker (Fullmetal Alchemist, One Piece). Rytlock Brimstone the charr warrior is voiced by Steve Blum (Spectacular Spider-Man). Eir Stegalkin the norn is voiced by Jocelyn Blue (Invader Zim, Space Jam). Zojja the asura is voiced by Felicia Day (Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, The Guild, Buffy the Vampire Slayer). Caithe the sylvari is voiced by Kari Wahlgren (Wolverine and the X-Men, Aliens in the Attic).
