I've decided to assemble a collection of some of the online games I played that have an elementalist on their series of classes. Elementalists are spellcasters who focus on the elements, particularly their destructive powers. Ever since I started playing MMORPGs, I always chose the elementalist archetype class, I like them not only because they possess magnificent power but also because they are the tempting class when it comes to beauty and glamour. Prepare yourself for a large array of elementalists!

A few of many games where I have tried the Mage:

Guild Wars

It is described that elementalists in Guild Wars are the masters of arcane lore and magical aptitude that can control the power of all the elements; this surely fits the archetype. They can summon the power of fire, wherein they send scorching flames and fireballs at enemies. They can burn the enemies through molten lavas and you can’t hide yourself from their meteors. With their power of the earth they can summon devastating earthquakes, can trap enemies in a stone so they cannot get away. Similarly they can also slow the movement speed and attacks of enemies with their power of controlling the water element. They have attributes that can control the duration and effectiveness of the element that they possess. What else can a Mage loving player ask for? They are weak when it comes to defenses but they are the master of superb offensive power.


Granado Espada

Elementalists in Granado Espada are extremely powerful and specialize mainly in AOE attacks. They have a wide attack range, and can control three elements: thunder, ice and fire. Make sure that you wear bracelets to enable these skills and using two powerful bracelets concurrently at higher levels is often considered overpowered by other players. Enemies will be frozen with the chilling touch when utilizing the ice element; they can’t even run when they are being hit by the rooting abilities of this freezing power! The burning flames of a fire user can surely kill you in a spur of a moment, slow to cast, but will leave the enemies dead in just a few hits. Again we see mages have slow running speed and low defense but considered the ultimate killer. Are you starting to notice a theme across these different games?


Atlantica Online

Elementalists in Atlantica Online are also powerful, they can control the weather thus causing severe damage to the enemies. Here we see a game that due to its nature of incorporating more strategic elements is a little different. A powerful spell in this class is the freezing atmosphere that can stop melee characters in their tracks. They are used as an anti-melee strategy tactic, but are weak against other magic users of any kind.


World of Warcraft

Now we come to the most popular game and the one that most people will identify with, even though I personally have not played it as much. ges wield the elements of fire, frost, and the arcane to destroy or neutralize their enemies. They are a robed class that excels at dealing massive damage from afar, casting elemental bolts at a single target, or raining destruction down upon their enemies in a wide area of effect. Mages can also augment their allies' spell-casting powers, summon food or drink to restore their friends, and even travel across the world in an instant by opening arcane portals to distant lands. When seeking someone to introduce monsters to a world of pain, the Mage is a good choice. With their elemental and arcane attacks, it's a safe bet something they can do won't be resisted by your chosen enemy. Damage is the name of the Mage game, and they do it well. Their arsenal includes some powerful crowd control spells, also, giving them the ability to keep hordes at bay -- in fact, these abilities can be used on the most common creatures in the game, thus making them extremely valuable for this purpose. Mages are supposed to be the kings of damage and AoE attacks but this is fiercely debated by the players.



Elementalists exist in almost every type of fantasy MMORPG. You will find them as well if you choose to play Warhammer, or a Warlock or Wizard in Everquest II. I expect this archetype will be around for many years to come.

I think this type of character is so appealing because we all wish somewhere inside, if we were picked on as kids, or just liked to read about history and fantasy, that fire or ice could shoot from our fingertips. This is why no matter where I go to play an MMORPG, you can bet I am playing an Elementalist.
